UHCL is an independent, regional university with an enrollment of about 9,000 students in forty-two bachelor’s degree programs and forty-six master’s degree programs. Large portions of UHCL undergraduates are minority (about 36% Black or Hispanic) and many are first generation college students (28%). The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities recognized UHCL as a Hispanic-serving institution. UHCL also has strong ties to the NASA Johnson Space Center community and a long history of meeting the needs of the local constituents.

UHCL offers the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physics as well as a collaborative Ph.D. in Physics with the University of Houston. The goal of the M.S. Physics program at UHCL is to prepare students for Ph.D. level work and advanced research in Physics and Astronomy. This program also serves to expand the knowledge base of practicing engineers at the neighboring NASA Johnson Space Center. The Bridge Program at UHCL is integrated into our Master’s Degree program. Students focus on the fundamentals, standard graduate level core courses and beginning research while being mentored by our faculty. Our primary goal is to prepare Bridge students for a smooth transition into Ph.D. programs at other institutions.
