The Department of Physics and Engineering at Delaware State University offers exciting research opportunities around the field of Optics and Photonics. As a Partnership Institution for the APS Bridge Program, we are committed to help students adjust to graduate school, and to transition from undergraduate programs in science to a graduate school specialized in Applied Optics and Photonics. The Optical Science Center for Applied Research (OSCAR) in which most of our research is done, is composed mostly of Physicists, but also brings together computer scientists, chemists, and mathematicians around interdisciplinary research projects. This OSCAR center is composed of an NSF-funded CREST center (Center for Research and Education in Optical Sciences and Applications) and a NASA-funded URC Center (Center for Applied Optics and Space Sciences), which plays a major role in motivating and training minority students—undergraduate and graduate. Delaware State University is a historically black university in Dover Delaware, the second largest research university in the state, with a diverse population of some 4000 undergraduate students and a growing number of graduate students, currently about 500.
