Assessing Student Knowledge
Assessing student knowledge and skills at the beginning of the program and determining appropriate course placements and other experiences is critical to overall student success. Use a pre-course assessment in addition to undergraduate grades to more accurately determine student preparedness.
- Create a pre-course assessment or prepared list of questions to assess the students’ incoming preparation, and make a coursework plan that helps fill undergraduate gaps and allow smooth transition to graduate coursework.
- Using a pre-course assessment to identify student difficulties can be a more accurate measure of student preparedness than focusing on undergraduate grades and relying on student conversations.
